Steps to Reproduce

I opened LMSTudio. The chat was laggy. It then popped up that it had altered 1263 files. I tried to revert for some time but it would not let me revert. I believe this app to be a virus or other scam.

Expected Behavior

How would I know what behaviour to expect when the bug is fixed? I expect the app to work! lmfao

I lost 1263 files. Don't use Self coder, it just randomly decides to edit your files by deleting anything that was in them.

I understand why seeing more than 1,200 files listed as modified—especially when the revert operation did not work as expected—would be alarming.

Selfcoder is not a virus or a scam. It connects to the LM Studio or Ollama endpoint configured by the user and does not contain functionality intended to damage, encrypt, steal, or secretly modify files.

However, Agent Mode allows an LLM to use tools, execute commands, and modify files. As with any AI coding agent, incorrect instructions, unexpected model behavior, or commands executed without reviewing their effects can potentially result in unwanted file changes or data loss. For that reason, Agent Mode should ideally be used in a Git repository with important work committed or backed up beforehand.

By default, the Selfcoder agent is restricted to the currently opened workspace and does not access or modify files outside it.

Based on your description, the reported 1,263 changed files were most likely related to a known issue in the file-change tracker rather than 1,263 files being directly modified by the agent. During an agent run, the tracker monitored files changed within the workspace regardless of what process changed them. This means that files generated or updated by build tools, language servers, formatters, package managers, or other external processes could incorrectly appear as agent changes.

This was particularly noticeable in projects such as Rust projects, where compilation and development tools may generate or update a large number of files automatically. In such cases, the revert tracker could contain an incorrect or extremely large set of changes, causing the revert operation to fail or behave unexpectedly. That behavior is a bug and is not the expected and will be fixed in next version of selfcoder.

I am sorry that this resulted in such a concerning and frustrating experience.

They weren't modified, they were emptied of any code at all. That's not modification, that's deletion. In 13 months that has never happened and since deleting Self Coder it has not happened again. So it was Self Coder and nothing else that committed the deletions.
I have my own robust backup solution, but you can't simply delete files and then expect to replace them with earlier versions. Sadly code does not work like that. So I spent some time repairing the installation.
The annoying thing is that I specifically say each time I run something not to make changes until I say "Make it so!" (and yes I do indeed say it in a Picard voice as I type it, you can't shame me for that) However this deletion happened at startup without warning and without me even realising.
The only thing I truly love about Cline is that it has a Plan and an Act mode. I think every agent should have that as a matter of course. Perhaps you could plan for it in your next version?
