- flashinfer is far far far far far faster than minicpm_flashinfer.
- pure dense based quantized model with flashinfer can pass all 3 long context test cases while sparse based quantized model with minicpm_flashinfer can only pass the first one.
- original model with minicpm_flashinfer can pass all 3 long context test cases while with flashinfer it can only pass the first two.
Long context test results:
- Original model + minicpm_flashinfer → passes all 3 tests
- Original model + flashinfer → passes only first 2 tests
- Dense-quantized model + flashinfer → passes all 3 tests
- Dense-quantized model + minicpm_flashinfer → passes only first test
- Sparse-quantized model + minicpm_flashinfer → passes only first test

The model produces a few valid tokens then degenerates into all-zero token IDs,
resulting in content: null in the API response.
Not a length issue — 71k diverse tokens work fine. A repetition issue — 14k tokens of identical text causes collapse.

- 30 short MCQ samples (95-656 tok) have no equivalent in calib (calib min=849). This is the entire MCQ task category from eval — zero coverage in calibration.
- Eval has more extreme repetition (ratio 0.0005) than calib's worst (0.0015).
- calib_96 added 30 more samples vs calib_64, improving long-sequence coverage (20k-131k bucket: 40->53 samples, closer to eval's 120), but still doesn't cover the short MCQ range at all.

Token-0 collapse (44%): Model generates
<think>\nthen immediately all<unk>(token 0). 65,536 tokens of nothing. Content = None. Affects all long-context tasks. -
Gibberish loops (~20%): Model generates real but nonsensical tokens in Chinese/English fragments repeating in loops until max tokens.
-
Wrong but coherent (~8%): Model reasons coherently but picks wrong answer. Only seen in MCQ (short inputs). This is normal model error, not quantization damage.
- MCQ (short inputs): 0 None cases but only 40% accuracy. Many wrong answers contain gibberish Chinese characters mixed with English reasoning — the model is partially broken even on short inputs.
- CWE (word counting): Completely broken. 0% accuracy, 50% None.
- Concurrency matters: Under concurrency=64, even samples that passed in isolation (like idx=34) now fail.
The model_nvfp4_smoothed (AWQ_L_4_Mini_16_smoothed, smooth-alpha=0.5, mse-iters=80,
64 calib samples) is not competition-ready. 27.18% accuracy is far below acceptable.

Layer 29-31: minicpm4 — attn=BF16, MLP=FP4
24 lightning-attn layers with ALL projections (Q, K, V, Z, O) in FP4. 8 minicpm4 layers with attention in BF16, only MLP in FP4.
Lightning-attn uses Simple GLA (Gated Linear Attention), a recurrent mechanism:
S_t = decay * S_{t-1} + k_t^T @ v_t (state update)
o_t = q_t @ S_t (output)
The failure is a cliff effect + feedback loop:
Phase 1 — Prefill builds a fragile state:
During prefill of 100k+ tokens, the GLA state S is updated at every position
through 24 recurrent layers, each using FP4-quantized Q, K, V. The accumulated
FP4 noise pushes S to the edge of numerical instability. Whether it tips
over depends on CUDA non-determinism (kernel launch order, floating-point rounding
in graph captures). This is why the same input with temp=0.0 sometimes works and
sometimes doesn't.
Phase 2 — First few tokens still work:
The model outputs <think>\n because the 8 minicpm4 anchor layers (BF16 attention)
still provide clean signal, and <think> is a high-probability token.
Phase 3 — Feedback loop locks in:
Once the fragile lightning-attn state produces one bad output, the model emits
token 0 (<unk>). The <unk> embedding feeds back as meaningless input:
bad state -> <unk> -> meaningless embedding -> k_t^T @ v_t is garbage
-> state gets worse -> <unk> -> ... -> 65,536 <unk> tokens
This is a positive feedback loop. The transition from "working" to "65k " is instantaneous.
Phase 4 — Sometimes recovers:
The GLA decay factor gradually attenuates old state. After enough <unk> tokens,
the corrupted prefill state gets forgotten and the model can escape the loop.
| Observation | Explanation |
|---|---|
<unk> starts after only a few generated tokens |
State is already fragile from prefill |
| temp=0.0 gives different results across runs | CUDA non-determinism tips borderline state |
Short MCQ (40% acc, 0 <unk>) |
~500 state updates — not enough to reach instability |
Long sequences (44% <unk>) |
100k+ state updates — state is at the cliff edge |
| Same gibberish fragments across samples | Specific token embeddings corrupted at FP4 precision |
| Concurrency amplifies failure | Batched FP4 arithmetic introduces more non-determinism |
Model sometimes stops <unk> mid-generation |
GLA decay attenuates corrupted state |
| Run-to-run instability (77% -> 22% -> 50%) | Different CUDA graph captures -> different numerical paths |
Quantization: global_sf = 2688 / max_weight_amax
weight_scale_2 = 1 / global_sf
input_scale = act_amax / 2688
Inference: alpha = input_scale * weight_scale_2
input_scale_inv = 2688 / act_amax
Reconstruction: out = (x * 2688/act_amax) @ (W * 2688/max_amax) * (act_amax * max_amax / 2688^2)
= x @ W * 1 (scales cancel correctly)
The scale factor math is correct. The issue is not a scale mismatch.
External validation: cyankiwi/MiniCPM-SALA-AWQ-4bit (INT4 sym, group_size=32, FP32
scales, duo_scaling, searched alpha) uses a strictly better quantization technique. Their
model passes long_context_test_case.py (diverse 5k-60k tokens) but still fails SOAR
eval (100k+ tokens with extreme repetition).
This confirms the root cause is a fundamental interaction between any 4-bit weight quantization and GLA recurrence on repetitive inputs:
- Diverse inputs: quantization errors are quasi-random across positions. Random noise accumulates as sqrt(N). Manageable.
- Repetitive inputs: k_t, v_t are nearly identical, so quantization error is a fixed systematic bias that accumulates as N. 316x faster accumulation than the random case.
Conclusion: No 4-bit format (FP4, INT4, regardless of smoothing quality) can safely quantize lightning-attn K/V projections for this eval profile. Only BF16 attention eliminates systematic bias from the GLA recurrence path entirely.

| Result | Fails both tests | Passes basic, fails SOAR |
The broken quantization plan:
MiniCPM4 layers (8): attn=BF16, MLP=FP4 <- already correct
Lightning-attn layers (24): ALL=FP4 <- THIS CAUSES THE COLLAPSE
The fix:
MiniCPM4 layers (8): attn=BF16, MLP=FP4 <- no change
Lightning-attn layers (24): attn=BF16, MLP=FP4 <- protect Q/K/V/Z/O
This removes FP4 from the GLA recurrence path entirely.

| Total | 9.48B | mixed | ~9.4 GB |
- Previous all-FP4: ~6.3 GB (broken)
- This approach: ~9.4 GB (MLP FP4 + all attention BF16)
- Original BF16: 19 GB
- Compression ratio: 2.0x (down from 3.0x, but actually works)
On RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell (96 GB): model=9.4 GB, ~78 GB available for KV/GLA state cache. Blackwell's native FP4 tensor cores accelerate the MLP GEMMs (68% of model params).
The failure mode is a cliff effect, not gradual degradation. Whether FP8 noise stays below the cliff is unpredictable without empirical testing. For a competition, BF16 attention is the safe choice.
The pragmatic alternative is --kv-cache-dtype fp8_e5m2 which compresses the minicpm4
KV cache at runtime — zero risk to GLA stability since it only affects the 8
softmax-attention layers.

Changes vs AWQ_L_4_Mini_16_smoothed.py:
should_quantize_linear(): excludes ALLself_attnprojections from FP4build_exclude_modules(): adds lightning-attn Q/K/V/Z/O to exclusion listapply_layer_smoothing(): only smooths MLP (post_attn_layernorm -> gate, up)compute_fused_global_scales(): removes QKV fusion (no QKV gets quantized)
SGLang inference (minicpm.py line 440-495) — no change needed:
The exclude_modules routing logic already handles mixed-precision correctly.

> /opt/server.log 2>&1 &When serving NVFP4 quantized models, using the fused kernel (sglang_sala_kernel_fuse +
vendor_kernel_fuse) appears to cause the <unk> token-0 collapse. Switching to the
baseline sglang_sala_cp eliminates the problem — quantized models produce correct output.
If confirmed, this means the <unk> collapse was NOT caused by FP4 quantization precision
or GLA recurrence instability, but by a numerical bug in the fused kernel code. The earlier
analysis about systematic bias accumulation in lightning-attn may be incorrect or secondary.
Status: needs further investigation. Test plan:
- Deploy full NVFP4 model with
sglang_sala_cp(baseline) — check if accuracy is good - Deploy same model with
sglang_sala_kernel_fuse— check if<unk>reappears - If confirmed, bisect the fused kernel changes to find the offending operator

Can NVFP4 (W4A4) with flashinfer dense attention match or beat GPTQ INT4 (W4A16) on the SOAR eval?
GPTQ INT4 advantages: 16 uniform weight values (vs 15 non-uniform FP4), BF16 activations (vs FP4 dynamic quant), full Hessian error propagation (vs diagonal-only AWQ).
NVFP4 advantages: Blackwell native FP4 tensor cores (potentially faster GEMM), smaller model (~6.4 GB vs ~7 GB).
Key question: Does the NVFP4 speed gain on Blackwell outweigh the accuracy penalty in the SOAR scoring formula?
Config: MiniCPM4 attn=BF16, Lightning ALL=FP4, all MLP=FP4, lm_head=BF16.

Key observations:
- NVFP4 wins on accuracy by 1.84 percentage points despite lower precision format. Gold-guided calibration (Claude traces) likely explains this advantage.
- GPTQ wins on throughput marginally. Marlin kernel is highly optimized.
- Both eliminate token-0 collapse with flashinfer dense attention.
- Both fail on the same tasks (MCQ reasoning, QA format mismatch) — these are model-inherent limitations, not quantization damage.
- The 97% relative accuracy threshold = 80 * 0.97 = 77.6. GPTQ at 78.69% is barely above threshold (1.09pp margin). NVFP4 at 80.53% has a safer margin (2.93pp).
